The less you know about Drew Hancock’s “Companion” the bigger chance you have of enjoying it. The film which stars the Heretic (2024) breakout Sophie Thatcher has a wild twist pretty early into the film. For someone who has seen the trailer for “Companion,” everything, including the ending and the twist, might not feel like they come off as a surprise in any way. So, if you are the select few who went into the film blind and were confused by how the movie pans out, here is a detailed breakdown.

Companion (2025) Plot Summary & Movie Synopsis:

The opening monologue by Iris sort of gives away the “Companion” ending by directly telling you Josh’s eventual fate, but let’s not get ahead of ourselves just yet.

The story kicks off with Josh (Jack Quaid) and Iris (Sophie Thatcher) driving to a lake house that is secluded and away from any kind of civilization. Right from the start we can sense that things aren’t right with Iris. It’s either some form of trauma or some kind of formal turmoil that makes her a little scared of social interaction. It is soon revealed what’s going on, but for the time being, the red-hearing keeps us engaged in her side of the story.

The lakehouse belongs to Sergey (Rupert Friend) and Josh’s close friend – Kat (Megan Suri) who doesn’t like Iris for some reason, is currently dating the millionaire. There’s also Josh’s old friend Eli (Harvey Guillen) who is at the getaway with his gay partner Patrick (Lukas Gage). The first night goes out in a blur as the three couples get drunk and sleep it off. The next morning, however, feels strange as Josh tells Iris to go out to the lakeside on her own as he would like to rest up after a night of partying.

What does Iris get to know about herself?

When Iris comes down to the lakeside, she finds Sergey there. His intentions were never just to hang out, but since Iris is a sweet soul, she plays nice. That is until he starts getting handsy and forces himself on her. Iris resists, but when she is unable to, she goes into her pocket, finds a sharp object, and ends up killing Sergey.

She rushes back to the house in disbelief and is scared about what she has done. Her anxiety is in full-fledged mode and when she confesses that she killed Segey because he was going to assault her and that all of them should call up the police; Josh states “Iris go to sleep!” shutting her off momentarily.

It is then revealed that Iris is tied to a chair and Josh is trying to calm her nerves by asking her to not panic. Basically, he then tells Iris that she is not human but a robot, a sex slave, or a fuckbot if you will, who he bought as a companion from a company that provides them for a fee.

The revelation is like a bolt of lightning to Iris, who, up until now, was too involved in her loving relationship with Josh. In her temporary memory, a self-chosen event was situated as the time that she first met Josh – a beautiful meet cute that eventually led to their relationship. But when she understands that her not being able to lie, or being completely dedicated to Josh is because of her programming it really shocks her.

What was Josh’s plan all along?

Beyond the Robot twist in Companion, we have another major shock in the narrative when we are able to see Josh’s true colors. He sits Iris down to tell her about who she is, but we also get to know why he can’t go to the police.

It is revealed that killing Sergey by hacking into Iris’ emotional settings was part of a plan that he had worked up with Kat. So basically, the plan was to hack into Iris’ system – a criminal offense in the first place, and mess up her settings which restrict her from harming ‘people’ and create a scenario where Iris kills Sergey. Their plan involved looting all of Sergey’s money, which they thought was okay to do because he ‘seemed’ like a bad guy anyway.

Much of “Companion” is about the way in which Josh wishes to control his supposed partner. In a way, the film can be seen as a metaphor for toxic relationships that often hinge on poor communication and lack of transparency. The sequence of him wanting to sit Iris down and explain the entire situation reeks of toxicity. He is a textbook red flag that walks around us like the mighty, iconic best example of what men should be.

While all of this is happening, Kat explains to Josh that Sergey isn’t a ‘criminal criminal’ like they had imagined. Things turn southwards when Iris somehow manages to get out of her ropes and escape, taking away Josh’s phone that controls her. Since her intelligence and instincts are set to high, she promptly disables some of the most basic settings like switching off when Josh calls her out. Josh and Kat realize that they have to let Eli know about their plans, to make things swifter. Eli is initially reluctant but realizes that there’s a lot of money involved and decides to help them using Patrick – who turns out to be a robot like Iris as well.

What does Patrick do?

All of them go into the woods searching for Iris. When Iris is unable to find a feasible way to escape from the place without going back to the house, she comes in Eli and Patrick’s way, and during a mishap, Eli gets shot by his own gun. She then rushes and tries to use Josh’s EV and a manipulated voice to drive home. However, Josh is able to disable the car after getting into Sergey’s phone. He also uses Eli’s phone to change Patrick’s settings, manipulating him into a more aggressive, revenge-seeking version of himself.

Iris, who gets in trouble with a Police car tries to get out of the situation but before that, Patrick intervenes and kills the cop brutally. He then disables her and brings her back to the house. He also brings along the body of the cop he killed which freaks Kat out, prompting her to make the hasty decision to leave. This angers Josh who instructs Patrick to stop her, but his aggressive nature makes him stab her instead.

Companion (2025) Movie Ending, Explained:

The ending of Companion mostly takes place in the big lakehouse. Iris is once again stuck to a chair as Josh tries to gaslight her. He tries to put all the blame for the deaths on her. He also tries to make sense of his actions by calling out living in the real world unfair. However, Iris, whose emotional intelligence has been raised, makes sure she calls a spade a spade. She tells Josh about how he is just a sad, pathetic human being who wants control over every little thing he owns. He then lowers her intelligence and asks her to burn her own hand.

By now, Josh had called up the agency ‘Empathix’ that gave him Iris; lying flat out that there was a major malfunction in the product. He then instructs Iris to put a gun to her head and pull the trigger, which she does even though we can see a hint of reluctance shown by the artificial intelligence that runs her.

When the guys from Empathix arrive he makes up another wild story about how Iris was jealous of the relationship he had with Kat and how she killed most of what they saw around them. By this time, he has instructed Patrick to be a police officer to double down on his story.

How does Iris kill Josh?

The guys are okay with Josh’s story. However, there’s one key thing that Josh missed out on and possibly did not know. The thought is that erasing the settings from the app that runs Iris and a shot to the head would rid everything from the programming that helps Iris work. However, the guys from Empathix tell him that everything a ‘Companion’ robot sees and hears is recorded and the drive is not in the head but somewhere near the stomach.

So, as the two guys are taking Iris away, Josh realizes his big fuck up and sends Patrick down to kill them in the driveway. One of them is killed instantly, but the other tech guy named Teddy tries to dodge the bullets and hides nearby. By this time, Iris is rebooted because Teddy had started the process of remote connection.

She tries to help Teddy before Patrick can help her but since she is rebooted she is unable to harm Patrick. However, now that she knows that robots have developed intelligence, she tells Patrick about Josh being the villain in all of this. She tells him that Josh is the reason why Eli is dead and he somehow got into his system manipulating Eli out of his memory. She also tells him that Eli did actually love him, unlike Josh who was just using Iris for his own greed. It prompts Patrick to take his own life.

Because of her help, Teddy gives Iris total automation as she is no more in Josh’s control. She gets into the house and for the first time, she and Josh are equals. However, the memories that still reside in her head don’t let her do it right away. Josh bashes her around the house tantalizing the last shred of her headspace that is filled with him. He almost overpowers her, but in a vulnerable moment that men who always want to be on top have, Iris uses the automatic wine opener that has been teased through the film to drill a hole in Josh’s head, killing him.

What does the mid-credit scene in ‘Companion’ mean?

After that, Iris takes the money that Josh was supposed to get and leaves the house, throwing his phone away on the pavement. The sequence signifies that Iris is now totally free.

In a mid-credit scene, we see Iris driving away as she waves her robot arm to greet another fellow robot of her own kind who seems to be in a similar situation to her. Maybe the sequence means that her act may be seen as a plea of defiance for other robots whose autonomy has been snatched away by their human counterparts. It might hint at a Companion 2, a sequel where there’s an uprising led by Iris, but we are getting ahead of ourselves again.
