Salt-Slicked draws its inspiration from the harrowing events aboard the slave ship Zong. In November 1781, approximately 130 enslaved Africans were tragically thrown overboard, a horrific act committed so the ship's owners could claim insurance money. Adding another layer of tragedy, ten individuals chose to jump into the ocean, ending their lives by their own volition. Rutendo's novel centers on these brave souls and their impossible choice.
Rutendo shared that she was haunted by the idea of those ten people who made the decision to jump. She was struck by the power of choosing life, and then choosing not to accept it. This idea sparked her to write Salt-Slicked. She was introduced to the story while taking a university class on postcolonialism, and the story immediately took hold of her. She wrote the beginning and ending of the book in that class, and the story just wouldn't let her go.
In her research, Rutendo encountered m. nourbeSe philip's epic poem Zong!, which explores the legal text of Gregson v. Gilbert. This poem gives voice to the victims of the massacre.
Rutendo reflects on the lasting impact of these events, noting that the lines of terror seem to connect and continue throughout history. However, she also found hope in the fact that there have always been people who recognize injustice and strive to make a difference.

In 2024, Rutendo was a contender for Canada Reads, championing Téa Mutonji's short story collection, Shut Up You're Pretty. In her pitch, she highlighted the promise of hope and future, born from a heavy past.

Rutendo, originally from Fort McMurray, Alberta, is an accomplished actor who found her passion for the stage through live poetry. She has starred in feature films like Giving Hope: The Ni'cola Mitchell Story and, more recently, Backspot, a queer cheer drama. She also appeared in a 2024 episode of the television show Tracker. She also served as a judge for the 2025 CBC Short Story Prize, with applications open until November 1.
