Are Maryland tolls Pay-By-Plate? ›

All eight Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) facilities are all electronic (cashless). With All Electronic Tolling (AET), drivers do not stop or slow down to pay tolls. Instead, they are collected through E-ZPass, Pay-By-Plate, and Video Tolling.

All MDTA facilities are now all-electronic (cashless)! Motorists pay all‑electronic (cashless) tolls via E-ZPass^® or Video Tolling.

A $25 civil penalty will be assessed for each citation. Failure to pay or to contest the toll violation can lead to suspension of or refusal to renew your Maryland vehicle registration and/or referral to the Maryland Central Collection Unit (CCU).

Pay-By-Plate is a hassle-free way to pay Maryland tolls. Tolls are automatically billed to your credit card each time you use Maryland's facilities, with no need for a transponder. With Pay-By-Plate, each time you travel through a participating toll facility, a camera takes a photo of your registered license plate.

In Maryland, the Intercounty Connector (ICC)/MD 200 and the I-95 Express Toll Lanes (ETL) are AET roads, and cash is not accepted. Customers without a valid E-ZPass account will be charged the Video Toll Rate.

During the pandemic, the Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) switched to cashless tolling to keep traffic moving, but billing came to a complete stop. For seven months, the state paused processing toll transactions while it worked to implement new software and provide financial relief to drivers.

E-ZPass is the easiest and most economical way to pay tolls in Maryland and in all other states in the E-ZPass group. It uses a properly mounted electronic transponder.

There are no monthly or annual fees for Maryland residents. Out-of-state residents who have fewer than three trips at Maryland toll facilities each month during the prior statement period will be assessed a maintenance fee.

To check if you owe toll in California, call at 877-229-8655. If you have a FasTrak, you can log into your account and view all the toll hits and the ones you owe. Note: For missed tolls in California, the concerned tolling authority sends a toll invoice to the vehicle owner (usually within 30 days).

You can pay tolls with an E-ZPass MA or Pay by Plate on the Massachusetts Turnpike, as well as on the Tobin Memorial Bridge, Sumner Tunnel, Ted Williams Tunnel and Callahan Tunnel.
