In 2025, I embarked on a golfing adventure, exploring five top-rated public golf courses in Michigan for the very first time. But this wasn't your typical New Year's resolution story.
The pledge was simple: play five new courses and uncover the hidden gems of Michigan's golfing paradise. And while the specific courses were a surprise, the experience was nothing short of extraordinary.
Each course offered a unique thrill, like unwrapping a gift on Christmas morning. The anticipation of teeing off at a new course, taking in the unfamiliar surroundings, and navigating the unknown fairways is truly exhilarating.
Here's a glimpse into my golfing journey, with a twist of controversy:
The Orchards Golf Club, Washington Township:
I ventured to this gem in mid-June. Consistently ranked among the best in Detroit, it lived up to its reputation. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., the course boasts expansive fairways, large bunkers, and a variety of holes. Despite the rain, the experience was unforgettable.
Tullymore Golf Resort, Stanwood:
In mid-August, I encountered this Jim Engh masterpiece. Winding through 800 acres of woods and wetlands, the course is a true test of approach shots. The multi-tiered greens are a delight, offering a new challenge with each pin placement. A golfer's paradise!
Timber Trace Golf Club, Pinckney:
Early September brought me to this hidden treasure. Under new management, the course has been transformed. Framed by woods, it offers a spacious feel, with ample fairways and challenging outskirts. A great course for a great deal.
Northville Hills Golf Club, Northville:
Also in early September, I played this Arnold Palmer-designed course on its 25th anniversary. Well-maintained and beautifully designed, it offers a balance of fun and challenge. The fast, rolling greens and strategically placed hazards make for an engaging round.
Forest Dunes Golf Club, Roscommon:
My late September visit to this course was a highlight. With 64 holes, including the reversible Red and Black on The Loop, it's a golfer's dream. Designed by Tom Weiskopf, it showcases his signature short par-4s and stunning par-3s. The Bootlegger par-3 course and The Loop will tempt you to plan a golf getaway.
But here's where it gets controversial: Which course truly stood out as the best? Was it the consistently top-ranked Orchards, the challenging Tullymore, the rejuvenated Timber Trace, the well-balanced Northville Hills, or the golfer's paradise, Forest Dunes? Each course offers a unique experience, but which one deserves the crown? Share your thoughts in the comments, and let's spark a friendly debate among golf enthusiasts!
