Marcie Reid stepped into the foster care system at the tender age of three, after enduring significant domestic abuse at the hands of her biological father, who tragically lost his life to murder. For beginners wondering what the care system entails, it's a vital network of support designed to protect vulnerable children from unsafe home environments, often involving temporary placements with foster families or in group homes. However, Marcie's experience highlights the harsh realities: she bounced between 13 different foster homes, each move disrupting her sense of stability and security. Despite these challenges, she emerged resilient, determined to prove that the difficulties of childhood don't have to limit one's potential. 'Navigating life in care was incredibly challenging,' she shared, 'but I've learned that your past doesn't define your future – you can rise above it.'

Now employed as an estates manager for Action For Children, a charity dedicated to aiding kids grappling with poverty or mistreatment, Marcie offers a fresh perspective on the system. At age 10, she reunited with her mother and adopted father, marking a pivotal return home. Reflecting on her journey, she emphasizes how every trial has contributed to her strength today: 'I wouldn't alter a single aspect of my experiences because they've molded me into who I am.' Her advocacy work has uncovered additional obstacles that many leaving care face, such as inadequate support in areas like housing, education, and employment. 'We need an open dialogue about the resources required for care leavers to thrive,' Marcie urges. 'Too often, individuals are pigeonholed by their histories, confining them to a narrow path that stifles their growth and opportunities. It's unfair and unnecessary – everyone deserves a chance to explore their full potential.'

As the reigning Miss York 2025, Marcie sees securing the national title as a golden opportunity to amplify her voice. 'I've worked through my own healing process,' she explains, 'and now it's time for me to guide others through their pain, helping them recover and achieve success.'
