Grandma's Chocolate Gravy Recipe (1)

Whenever Grandma wanted to treat us kids growing up, she’d make us special treats.

Hands down one of my very favorites was her homemade chocolate gravy.

It was rich and delicious and so very chocolatey.

And so good on anything you put it on.

What is chocolate gravy?

Chocolate gravy may sound weird if you aren’t from the South.

It’s a thick chocolate sauce somewhere between chocolate pudding and thick hot fudge in texture and thickness made from a combination of cocoa powder, sugar, flour, and milk.

Generally, people serve it on homemade biscuits but sometimes they put it on ice cream, drizzle it on buttered toast, or even serve it over a stack of fluffy pancakes.

Ingredients

To make this you’ll need:

  • Sugar– Granulated
  • Flour– All purpose
  • Cocoa powder– Use a good quality cocoa powder if you can since the flavor really comes from this.
  • Milk– Don’t use skim milk.
  • Butter
  • Vanilla– Real vanilla works better than imitation vanilla extract

Serving Suggestions

Most often, you’ll see chocolate gravy spooned over freshly baked biscuits.

But it would be delicious on:

  • waffles
  • pancakes
  • french toast
  • fresh berries like sliced strawberries

Storing Leftovers

Store leftover chocolate gravy in a sealed container in the fridge for up to a week.

The gravy may thicken a lot in the fridge.

When you reheat it, reheat it over medium heat on the stove and whisk in more milk to thin it out if needed.

Tips and Tricks

  • When in doubt, whisk! The more you whisk the less likely the gravy will get lumpy.
  • Don’t turn the stove up past medium. You don’t want to scorch the gravy.
  • The gravy will thicken slightly as it cools.
